Macaroni Kid Crafts - May Baskets Using Felt Flowers For MAY DAY

Celebrate May By Making These Easy Felt Flowers and May Baskets

By Aimee Falso, Newport/Bristol Publisher Mom April 26, 2020

May Day is almost here! Celebrated on May 1st, the holiday is thought to have originated in Roman times as a festival of flowers. One of the most common customs for celebrating this day is by making small baskets filled with flowers and even a few treats to share.

This year flowers might be hard to find and here is a way you can make your own flowers out of felt so you can fill your baskets and enjoy them throughout the month of May!

MAKE A MAY BASKET

Things You Need
  • A full sheet (at least 8 1/2 x11) of spring colored or patterned paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape and/or a stapler
  • Felt Flowers (see below for the how to), candy or other trinkets to fill the basket

Create Your Basket

  • Draw a 6-8" quarter circle on the paper. A plate or lid makes a great template! Using the scissors, cut the shape from the paper.
  • Roll together into a cone shape and tape to hold in place.
  • Cut a 10-12" strip of paper for the handle. Staple each end to opposite sides of the cone.
  • Fill the cone with flowers and treats before delivering to a neighbor or using them to decorate your house

MAKE FELT FLOWERS

You Will Need:

  • Felt
  • Small branches
  • Hot glue gun

How To Create Felt Flowers:

  • Cut heart shapes out of felt. You will need 2-4 hearts per flower. These hearts are about 2" but you can vary sizes.
  • Make a small cross with the hot glue at the bottom of a heart.
  • Place a branch on the cross of glue with the tip of the branch coming up to the point at the top of the heart and wrap the felt around the branch.
  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create as many petals on your flower as you'd like.
  • Make just one flower or a whole bouquet!
