ABOUT THE PHOTO AND VIDEO CONTEST
"Fifth and eighth graders are studying American history including the Civil War," says Dale Parvin, Rotary event chair. "We try to make the Civil War events they read about in their history books come to life. The photo and video contests will take it one step further."
Activities during the weekend include:
- Four battle reenactments (with cannon and musket fire)
- Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address
- Solider Encampments
And students in 5th thru 8th grade can take pictures and videos during the weekend and submit their best photo and/or video to enter the contest. Students may enter both contests. Videos must be 60 seconds or less to qualify.
Contest participants will not be permitted to go onto the field where battles are being reenacted. "Great photos and videos can be taken along the sidelines," says Parvin. All encampments are available for photo or video recording. Students may use or interview reenactors for their video or still photos.
Entries, along with the student's name, phone number, age, school and name of teacher need to be emailed to blueandgraycivilwar@gmail.com after the event ends. The submission deadline is Friday, March 23.
Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and notified by phone and posted to the Rotary's website by Friday, March 30. Winners receive $200, $100, $50 for first, second and third place in each category. In addition, one entry will be selected, from all entries, at random, and the winner and family will receive a dinner for four at Café Firenze in Moorpark.
The Blue & The Gray Civil War reenactment in Moorpark is the largest battle reenactment on the West Coast. Hundreds of re-enactors from all over the country come to Moorpark each year to participate.
Now in its 17th year, the event takes place at Hitch Ranch (100 West High St., Moorpark, entrance adjacent to the Moorpark Post Office). A free shuttle will take visitors to the event site.
