Make Your Own Rainbow Dough

By Bronwyn Velazquez - Monterey Park and Glendale Macaroni Kid Publisher August 26, 2018

INGREDIENTS & SUPPLIES

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of cream of tarter
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of warm water
  • Food coloring of your choice.
  • Essential oils of your choice.
  • Glitter
  • Spatula or large spoon
  • Cooking Pot
  • Cutting mat
  • Disposable gloves if you do not wish to get dye and oils on your hands.
  • Baggies

HOW TO:

Step 1: Mix all dry and liquid ingredients into you pan of choice.

Step 2: Place pot on the stove and begin to cook all ingredients on a medium heat. Do NOT over heat or over cook the dough. It will burn. It takes a bit of time to cook, so be patient stirring. It will eventually form a lump, then it will form a ball.

Step 3:. After your dough has taken the ball form, remove from heat. Remove the dough promptly. When the dough has become cool enough to touch and handle, you can sub divide your dough into smaller sized balls for coloring. At this time roll as many balls as you would like per color.

Step 4: Gather your glitter, food coloring and essential oils. Some of the supplies I prefer to use are in the picture below. Feel free to use what you have, and buy only what you need or want to try. Go EZ on certain essential oils like peppermint and cinnamon. A little goes a long way.

Step 5: I like to roll the dough flat like a pancake and drop in my dye. I start to knead in the color. I then add a few drops of oils and knead more. Then I flatten into a pancake and add glitter. I then knead it some more. And i repeat the steps until I achieve the color, scent and glitter accent I desire. I like to use peppermint with blue and silver glitter. It also makes a perfect dough for winter. I also love the Neon purple, with bright pink glitter and grapefruit oils. Feel free to experiment.

Step 6: Repeat each step for each ball of dough til you achieve a full Rainbow. I used 6 balls of dough to make our rainbow.

TIPS:

  • Have fun with your kids, experimenting with scents and colors.
  • After you are finished. Keep your dough in air tight containers or baggies.
