Tips & Tricks: Graduation Cap Decoration

What I learned while making your grad's cap

By Yuliya Eisenberg and Mackenzie Erickson May 10, 2022

Graduation season is right around the corner. If you're like me, you have found yourself in awe of the impressive decorations that graduates add to their mortar boards (official name for the funny looking graduation caps). If you're also like me, you might feel a bit intimidated by the thought of decorating a graduation cap. Thankfully, we have an incredibly talented mom right here in Moorpark who has shared with us some amazing tips and tricks to make the process easier! Here are the things Yuliya Eisenberg, of Windsong Crafts learned while decorating graduation caps.

1. The Cardstock Topper

Use a cardstock topper to make your life easier. When you pick cardstock, don't pick the floppy kind (it wrinkles from glue). Also, choose the one with a colored core otherwise the edges of your decorations will be white and stand out.

2. The Dimensions

The dimensions are 9.25 x 9.25 inches. Cut your topper slightly smaller.

3. The Button

You will want the hole in the middle of your topper to have a 3/4 inch diameter

4. The Decorations

All the metallic and plastic stickers melt or warp with hot glue. Try to find decorations on cardstock OR place the sticker on cardstock topper first, and then glue down the topper.

5. The Application

To secure the topper to your graduation cap, your best bet is going to be using a strong double sided foam square or Velcro set.

6. The Cost

If you burn your fingers with hot glue often enough, you won't mind it anymore. 😊😉

Hopefully these helpful tips will save you some frustration and trips to the craft store.
